TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) Ultrasound Examination

TOFD is an accurate and sensitive ultrasonic method for non-destructive testing of longitudinal and axial welds. It uses peak diffraction techniques to identify discontinuities in the material.

How it works:

  • A pair of transducers are located on opposite sides of the weld

  • The transmitting transducer sends an ultrasonic pulse

  • The receiving transducer detects the diffracted waves, identifying discontinuities

Advantages:

  • Sensitive to all types of discontinuities, including volumetric ones

  • Instant results through electronic equipment

  • Increased safety – no radiation involved and no need to evacuate personnel
